“Clearly, the forms that accountability may take in schools and education systems, as a whole, need to be better understood as do the consequences of introducing one form as distinct from another need to be better understood. Hence, the general purpose of this paper – to provide a descriptive account of contemporary educational accountability policies and practices evident in a sample of developed countries around the world (examining the consequences of various accountability tools is beyond the scope of this paper).”
